When to Call for Emergency HVAC Service — and When to Wait Until Morning

Your air conditioner stops working at 10 PM on the hottest night of the year. Or your heat goes out when overnight temperatures are dropping into the 20s. Should you call for emergency service right now, or can it wait until morning? Here's a practical guide to help you decide — and what to do in the meantime.

Situations That Warrant an Emergency Call Right Now

No heat when outdoor temperatures are below freezing — This isn't just discomfort, it's a safety issue. Pipes can freeze and burst in a matter of hours during a hard freeze, and vulnerable household members — young children, elderly adults, pets — face real health risks. Call immediately.

You smell gas near your HVAC equipment — This is never a "wait until morning" situation. Leave your home, don't operate any switches or appliances, and call your gas company's emergency line followed by 911. Only return when cleared by professionals.

You smell burning from the unit — A burning smell, especially one that smells electrical, can indicate a wiring issue or failing motor that poses a fire risk. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call for service.

Your carbon monoxide detector is going off — Evacuate immediately and call 911. A malfunctioning heat exchanger in a furnace can produce carbon monoxide. This is always an emergency.

No cooling when outdoor temps are above 95°F and vulnerable people are in the home — Heat illness is a genuine medical risk. If you have elderly family members, young children, or anyone with a medical condition in the home, don't wait.

Situations That Can Usually Wait Until Morning

The AC isn't cooling as well as usual but is still running — If temperatures are manageable and the system is operational, this can usually wait. It could be as simple as a dirty filter or low refrigerant.

One room isn't comfortable but the rest of the house is — A single-zone comfort issue is unlikely to be an emergency. A damper, duct issue, or register problem is the more likely cause.

The system is making a new noise but running normally — New sounds are worth investigating soon, but if the system is cooling or heating and temperatures are reasonable, morning is fine.

The unit is short-cycling (turning on and off frequently) — This is a real problem that needs attention soon, but it's generally not an overnight emergency unless temperatures are extreme.

What to Do While You Wait

Whether you've called for emergency service or decided to wait until morning, here are a few things that can help:

  • Check your circuit breaker first — a tripped breaker is the most common "emergency" call that turns out to be a simple fix
  • Replace your air filter if it looks dirty — a severely clogged filter can cause the system to shut down on high limit
  • Check that all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed
  • If no heat: gather in one room and use safe supplemental heat if available
  • If no cooling: close blinds, run ceiling fans counterclockwise, and move to the lowest level of the home which stays coolest
