Why Your New AC System Isn't Keeping Up — And It's Not the Unit's Fault

It's one of the most frustrating calls we get. A homeowner has just invested in a new air conditioning system — sometimes spending $5,000 or more — and the house still doesn't feel right. One room won't cool down. The system runs constantly. The energy bill didn't drop the way they expected. What's going on?

In most cases, the equipment itself isn't the problem. Here are the most common culprits.

1. The System Was Oversized

Bigger isn't better when it comes to HVAC. An oversized AC unit cools the air so quickly that it shuts off before it has time to adequately remove humidity. The result is a house that feels cold but clammy — the air temperature drops but the space never truly feels comfortable, especially in humid Alabama summers.

Proper sizing requires a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation levels, window area, orientation, and local climate. Contractors who skip this step and simply match the tonnage of the old unit are making a common and costly mistake.

2. The Ductwork Wasn't Evaluated

A new, efficient system pushing air through old, leaky ductwork is like putting a powerful engine in a car with flat tires. The equipment performs beautifully — but the delivery system wastes much of that work before the conditioned air reaches your living space.

Any time a new system is installed, the ductwork should be inspected for leaks, blockages, proper insulation, and correct sizing for the new equipment. If this step was skipped, it could explain why your new system isn't living up to expectations.

3. The Refrigerant Charge Wasn't Set Correctly

A new system that was charged with too little or too much refrigerant won't operate at its rated efficiency. This is more common than it should be. Proper refrigerant charging requires measuring superheat and subcooling values under specific operating conditions — not just adding refrigerant until the gauge looks right. Ask your technician if the charge was verified against manufacturer specifications.

4. Your Home Has Air Sealing or Insulation Issues

Your HVAC system conditions air inside your home's envelope. If that envelope has significant air leaks — around recessed lighting, attic hatches, plumbing penetrations, or old windows — your system is constantly fighting against outside air infiltrating and conditioned air escaping.

In North Alabama's climate, attic insulation is particularly important. An attic that reaches 140°F in summer radiates heat down through your ceiling all day long, adding significant load to your cooling system regardless of how efficient the equipment is.

5. The Thermostat Placement Is Affecting Performance

A thermostat located near a sunny window, a lamp, or a supply vent will read temperatures that don't reflect the actual comfort level of your home. This can cause the system to short-cycle, run too long, or struggle to satisfy — none of which have anything to do with the equipment itself.

6. The Installation Itself Had Issues

Unfortunately, installation quality varies significantly in the HVAC industry. Improper refrigerant line sizing, incorrect electrical connections, a poorly configured air handler, or a condenser unit that wasn't leveled properly can all affect performance. If your system was installed by the lowest bidder or a crew that rushed through the job, it's worth having an independent technician evaluate the installation.

What to Do

If your new system isn't performing as expected, don't just live with it or assume the equipment is defective. A thorough diagnostic from an experienced technician can identify exactly where the performance gap is — whether it's the installation, the ductwork, the home itself, or something else entirely. In many cases, a relatively straightforward correction makes a significant difference.
